Is our universe a computer simulation?
A number of prominent scientists, thinkers and philosophers believe that there is a mathematical certainty that our universe is a strange video game. Sounds kind of odd? Well, here’s the argument:
Our civilization is now at the threshold of artificial life: We are close to the creation of computer simulations, where the characters are intelligent enough to be as artificial intelligence. Also, if this technology will create, so that we could make a ton of these artificial worlds. Why? Well, if we have a great new technology that we do not simply one of the new widgets, but we make millions of them. In this sense, that the number of artificial universes out there is significantly greater than the number of real universes. So basically, the probability that we live in an artificial universe is very high.
There are a few reservations about this theory, however. If the many worlds theory of quantum physics proves to be true, this probability will be altered significantly. Second, there is a chance the AI will not be realized by us or any other intelligent species in the galaxy. Most believe that this scenario very unlikely, though. And finally there is the possibility that we will destroy ourselves before we can achieve artificial intelligence.
If none of these scenarios come true, and we really do have to develop artificial life, there is a very good chance that our universe is only a simulation. But do not be too afraid. It is the only universe we know, and a simulated universe is really nothing more than a real universe. After all, the concept of true “is arbitrary.
